The LGBT and Sexuality Studies Minor

The LGBT and Sexuality Studies Minor is housed in and administered by the Women’s Studies Program. The minor draws on the work of a significant community of faculty working in various parts of LGBT and Sexuality Studies scholarship. The minor offers students an opportunity to consider key social and academic issues through the critical lens of LGBT and Sexuality theory and applied research. This minor is in keeping with the mission of the Women's Studies program: an interdisciplinary program dedicated to research, teaching, and practice on gender as it intersects with race, class, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and other socially important categories. 

A minor in LGBT & Sexuality Studies helps students bring questions to the surface about gender roles, sex and sexuality, health and well being, economic and political development, war and peace, and the list goes on. In all of these, both old and emergent questions concerning LGBT populations and individuals, and sexuality more broadly, play a key part. The LGBT and Sexuality Studies minor prepares students to go on to professional and graduate schools in law, humanities, social sciences, and other fields, and to pursue careers in both private and public sectors, including business, law, government, public interest and social service organizations.

Requirements

The minor consists of 18 credit hours, all of which are 2000-level or higher courses.  No more than two courses may be counted towards a student’s major and the LGBT and Sexuality Studies Minor. Declaration of the minor no later that the beginning of your senior year.

Required courses: Students may take any two of the following three courses:

  • WSTU 2120: Introduction to Women’s Studies
  • AMST/HIST/WSTU 2380: Sexuality in U.S. Cultural History
  • ENGL 3980 or 3830: Queer Studies

Elective courses:  Students would take four courses from the following nine:

  • ENGL 3840:  Gender and Literature
  • PHIL 2125: Philosophy of Race and Gender
  • PSYC 3150: Psychology of Sex Differences
  • SOC 2175: Sociology of Sex and Gender
  • WSTU 2121: Anthropology of Gender
  • WSTU 3170: Athletics and Gender
  • WSTU 3170: Gendered Bodies
  • WSTU 3170: Sexuality and Law
  • WSTU 3195:  Undergraduate Research

Additionally, two graduate courses would be available as electives, with the respective instructor’s permission:

  • ENGL 6120: Advanced Literary Theory
  • WSTU 6270: Genders of Popular Culture
